From the sumptuous jet-embroidered bolero of the “Ballets Russes” collection (A/W 1976) to today’s sharp blazers, worn sexily against the skin, velvet has always embodied Monsieur Saint Laurent’s attraction to sensuality and eroticism. Velvet is imbued with an innate dramatic power, its texture capturing the light and creating a sense of movement and depth. What ingredient could better translate luxurious velvet into a fragrance than a flamboyant scarlet rose? “I saw a rose that I wanted to recreate, in a way that only a perfume could convey. I wanted mine to express the beauty, emotion, and power of this unique rose,” says Carlos Benaïm, the Master Perfumer behind VELOURS. Benaïm drew his initial inspiration from a haute couture ingredient, specially created for YSL: the spectacular Essentiel de Rose N°3. Extracted from the essence of roses picked at dawn, this precious ingredient is crafted in Grasse using a high-tech process that preserves all the fragrant molecules of the Damask rose. Fresher and greener than rose essence, more modern and transparent than rose absolute, this sustainable and fair-trade material “has the strength and clarity of a magnificent red rose, but also the natural scent and freshness of the flower on its stem,” enthuses Carlos Benaïm. To transform the dewy rose petals into a spectacular red velvet, the Master Perfumer needed the depth and mystery of patchouli, cultivated in a unique terroir to produce a sensual and particularly refined oil.
