On the 25th November 2015, the Edgars UNiTE Orange Day Campaign was launched with the goal of empowering those women who are survivors of domestic violence. The Edgars UNiTE initiative aims to support survivors of gender-based violence by developing their skills in the world of fashion, design and sewing through informal workshop and accredited training courses. Edgars UNiTE provides retail skills training that opens opportunities for employment, entrepreneurship and encourages independence for these women. This will ultimately allow the survivors to reclaim their dignity and become self-sufficient.

When the accredited program is completed, each woman receives a sewing machine and voucher from Edgars UNiTE to help them start their own business, or pursue other income generating work, or use their qualification to secure employment. To date, over 229 women across Gauteng, Western Cape and Kwazulu Natal have undergone and completed their accredited training. The Campaign recently launched in the Eastern Cape where a further 50 women will be trained.

Edgars UNiTE has now partnered with the TEARS foundation, a women led organisation that provides help regardless of ethnicity, religion, culture or socio-economic background or location. The TEARS foundation provides access to Crisis Intervention, Advocacy, Counselling, and Prevention Education Services for those impacted by domestic violence, sexual assault and child sexual abuse. TEARS Foundation also provides assistance nationwide with a 24 hour free SMS service to anyone who has access to a cellphone. All these services are provide free of charge.

The service identifies the closest centre to you and they link or connect victims to facilities that offer services such as individual counselling, group counselling/couples counselling, support groups, volunteer opportunities, links victims to emergency shelters, refers victims to medical facilities, including rape victim, for medical attention. The TEARS Foundation also follow-up with the police on behalf of victims who have case numbers, give victims advice on how to apply for a protection order, refer child victims to child friendly facilities and guide women and men on how to leave abusive relationships
