Scatter cushions top tip 1:Match your new colours to the existing palette

1.

The colour scheme in your living room is likely to have a few tones as its base – predominantly browns and beiges, for example, or shades of grey – and it’s important to bear this in mind when changing your scatter cushions. Make sure the new cushions will blend with your existing “backdrop” rather than clashing with it.

Take the DECOR by Edgars seasonal selection of cushions in a range of bright and pretty shades seen above: if your living room is all about elegant grey tones, for example, the scatter cushions in green – in various shades and patterns – will add a boost of leafy appeal to the space. The pinks and yellow-orange scatters, on the other hand, will give instant freshness and energy to an existing scheme in natural tones of brown, stone and cream

Scatter cushions top tip 2:Balance bolder prints with neutrals and plains

To create a harmonious look, combine plain cushions with prints – as seen here, where the plain dark blue scatter creates a stylish base against which other two cushions stand out beautifully, resulting in a very smart overall picture.
How to make your own best combinations? In store, just ask if you can try out different combinations on a nearby sofa to see what works well together – the staff are very likely to be happy to accommodate you (who doesn’t love a cushion-styling session, after all?). And when shopping online, make screen grabs of cushion covers you like and place them alongside one another in a document or on your desktop to check how they look grouped together before buying.

Scatter cushions top tip 3:Layer up different textures for a rich look

.3

Most experts say the biggest mistake people make when it comes to scatter cushions is being too conservative – and especially, avoiding pattern and texture – and that this means we’re not finishing off our spaces with flair.
Take a closer look at the cushion combo created by the DECOR by Edgars stylists: they have used two cushions in black and white colourways, but one is in a bold monochrome print, while the other is a woven fabric with a fine striped texture – and features tactile tassels too. This variation in pattern and texture, while keeping to the same colour range, makes for a look that has loads of visual impact but doesn’t confuse the eye by being too varied and “busy”.

Scatter cushions top tip 4:Vary cushion shapes and sizes

Scatter cushions come in a wide range of shapes and sizes, from squares to rectangles and sometimes even circles. For a contemporary look, combine more than one shape and size in a grouping of cushions on your sofa or bed, using the general rule that the largest size should be placed at the back, and the smallest in front. Another helpful tip is to choose the boldest print or texture for your smallest scatter cushion, especially if you’re still building your styling confidence.buying.

Scatter cushions top tip 5:Invest in good-quality cushion inners

.5

High-quality cushion inners are an excellent investment buy, as having inners that keep their shape and are well-filled – thus staying firm, shapely and repuffable over the years – means that you can simply switch up your cushion covers rather than needing to replace the inners.

And don’t forget: avoid using too many cushions on a single couch or bed. We recommend a maximum of three pillows and scatters on a single or three-quarter bed – scale up from there to about six or seven (absolute maximum) on a super king size. On a sofa or couch, it again depends on size – but the general consensus is that four to six are enough for a three-seater sofa, while for a corner couch, you should use between three and five.
